Dr. Bassett Contributes to Huffington Post – Here’s Why Your Spring Allergies Are Already Flaring Up

It’s only the beginning of March, but spring allergies are already on the rise. Over at his office at Allergy and Asthma Care of New York, Dr. Clifford Bassett said he’s “already seeing a tenfold increase in the volume of phone calls of people complaining of allergies and allergy-like symptoms.” The reason for all those early calls? This more-or-less comfy, mild winter that many of us have enjoyed so far. Read More: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/allergy-season-2016

Dr. Bassett Contributes to The Weather Channel – The Truth About the 2016 Spring Allergy Season

The spring allergy season is just around the corner, which means it’s almost time to stock up on tissues, nasal spray and anything else you use to beat the incoming “pollen vortex.” A few factors, including the mostly mild winter thus far and the presence of El Niño, could mean that the 2016 spring allergy season will be bigger and badder than previous years. “In any year with an El Niño phenomenon, we expect certain areas of the country, particularly in the South, to be plagued by lots of rainfall and precipitation,” Dr. Clifford Bassett, founder and medical director at […]

Dr. Bassett Contributes to New York Daily News – The Teal Pumpkin Project promotes non-food treats for kids with allergies on Halloween

hat’s the idea of the Teal Pumpkin Project, a no-candy initiative for Halloween ghosts and goblins who happen to have food allergies. Homeowners are encouraged to offer non-candy alternatives like toys, stickers and glow sticks — then place a teal painted pumpkin outside their homes to promote the effort. But some parents think organizers are out of their gourds. “It seems kind of stupid. I mean, If I have a peanut allergy and I get candy with peanuts in it, I just don’t eat them,” says one commenter on a Yappi.com forum called “How many people on here hate the Teal […]

Dr. Bassett Contributes to HealthZette – Let ‘Em Get Dirty!

If you want your child to be allergy free, try taking them outside and introducing them to some good ol’ dirt. Even better — the dirt found where cows live. Why? Researchers have unlocked a link between farms — particularly dairy farms — and a lower incidence of allergy and asthma in kids. Farms have the absolute best germs going for preventing respiratory issues and allergies. Apparently the old-fashioned ways are still the best. Put away the ever-present bacterial wipes and expose your kids to some healthy environmental microbes. Read More: http://www.lifezette.com/healthzette/let-em-get-dirty/

Dr. Bassett Contributes to Allergic Living – Asthma and Swimming: How to Keep Chlorine in Check

Q: We’re amazed that our young daughter with asthma loves swimming (indoors as well as out). We thought the water and chlorine would bother her lungs, but they don’t. Is swimming OK for, or even good for, asthma? Dr. Bassett:  Generally speaking, swimming is among the best exercise choices for a child, adolescent or young adult with asthma. The increased humidity of the air in the immediate environment of a pool or body of water offers a “breathable” space that is well tolerated by most. Dr. Bassett Contributes to Crain’s New York Business – Why are your allergies so much worse in New York? Blame males

Spring has arrived, and so has allergy season. Fourteen percent of Americans are dealing with the congestion, sinus inflammation and sneezing brought on by their allergies. With pollen’s link to plants, it may be surprising that hyperurbanized New York City is consistently worse than average, as the chart below shows. But Dr. Clifford Bassett, medical director of Allergy & Asthma Care of New York, said allergy conditions are worse in urban areas because air pollution “supercharges” the pollen. Plant gender plays an important role as well. Read More: http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20150507/HEALTH_CARE/150509872/suffering-from-allergies-blame-males
