Dr. Bassett on NPR’s “Please explain” with Leonard Lopate – Spring is Coming. So Are Allergies.

‘Tis the season for sniffles. Millions of Americans suffer from allergies, seasonal and otherwise. For this week’s Please Explain, Dr. Clifford Bassett, the founder and medical director of Allergy and Asthma Care of New York, joins us to explain what an allergy is (and isn’t), identify key triggers – from nuts to gluten to the nickel commonly used in cell phones – and offer both medical and nonmedical alternatives to treatment. Dr. Bassett Contributes to Fox News – Can you be allergic to Valentine’s Day?

Many people are quite surprised each year that instead of being a special, amorous day, Valentine’s Day may be a source of dismay when it becomes a potpourri (literally) of surprising and unexpected allergy triggers for many allergy sufferers.  These triggers often include lovely fragrant flowers, perfumes, luscious chocolates, scented candles and more. Depending on one’s sensitivity, you or your partner may indeed be affected by one or many not uncommon allergy triggers. Dr. Bassett Contributes to Self – I Got An Air Purifier And It Literally Changed My Life

Dr. Bassett Contributes to Self – I Got An Air Purifier And It Literally Changed My Life

For four years, I lived on 58th street in Manhattan. My apartment was basically on the Queensborough Bridge, right where cars enter and exit. I know what you’re thinking—”How loud was that?”—and you’d have a point. In all honesty, it was pretty noisy. But as it would turn out, that was only the most obvious problem, not the most important one. I turned my A/C to the “fan” setting each night to cover up the noise and kept my double windows closed pretty much at all times. While it was annoying, I didn’t really mind, since leaving them open meant that, within a day, […]

Dr. Bassett Contributes to New York Daily News – Children less likely to develop asthma if raised in home with dogs

Talk about man’s best friend! A new study reveals that kids raised in a home with dogs are less likely to develop asthma. The journal JAMA Pediatrics’ study of more than 1 million Swedish children also applies to kids who grew up on a farm with animals. But children surrounded by dogs did even better than their agrarian pals; they were 15% less likely to later develop asthma than those who did not live with dogs.   Read More: http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/health/children-asthma-dogs-home-article-1.2422209

Dr. Bassett Contributes to Allergic Living – Can Food Allergies Put You at a Higher Risk of Developing Asthma?

Dr. Bassett Contributes to Allergic Living – Can Food Allergies Put You at a Higher Risk of Developing Asthma?

Q: My 6-year-old son has food allergies and now also seems to be coughing a lot during the night (long after he’s eaten). Could he be developing asthma? How can we know and what are the next steps?  Dr. Bassett: You are right to be concerned. A history of atopy or allergy, including to food, increases the risk for other allergic conditions, such as asthma. And it’s possible that your son is experiencing nocturnal asthma, which refers to symptoms… Read More: http://allergicliving.com/2015/10/19/can-food-allergies-put-you-at-a-higher-risk-of-developing-asthma/

Dr. Bassett Contributes to New York Daily News – Thirty minutes of exercise is a day a breath of fresh air for asthma sufferers, not enough for everyone else, according to new studies

Dr. Bassett Contributes to New York Daily News – Thirty minutes of exercise is a day a breath of fresh air for asthma sufferers, not enough for everyone else, according to new studies

Half an hour a day can keep the asthma doctor away. But if you want to steer clear of the cardiologist, you may want to quadruple that. Two separate studies published this week addressed the idea of exercising 30 minutes a day. The asthma report said that’s ideal; the other, examining heart failure, pointed to the need for far more exercise. Dr. Bassett Contributes to Fox News – Obama’s energy plan ‘step in right direction’ for asthma sufferers, doctors say

President Barack Obama unveiled the final version of his plan to cut emissions from U.S. power plants Monday, flanked by parents of pediatric asthma patients, medical professionals and Environmental Protection Agency officials. Calling it the “single most important step” America has taken to fight climate change, Obama outlined a plan that the White House said will help to reduce 90,000 asthma attacks in children by 2030, as well as prevent premature deaths related to power plant emissions and cut down on missed school and work days. Dr. Bassett Contributes to Allergic Living – Asthma and Swimming: How to Keep Chlorine in Check

Dr. Bassett Contributes to Allergic Living – Asthma and Swimming: How to Keep Chlorine in Check

Q: We’re amazed that our young daughter with asthma loves swimming (indoors as well as out). We thought the water and chlorine would bother her lungs, but they don’t. Is swimming OK for, or even good for, asthma? Dr. Bassett:  Generally speaking, swimming is among the best exercise choices for a child, adolescent or young adult with asthma. The increased humidity of the air in the immediate environment of a pool or body of water offers a “breathable” space that is well tolerated by most.
